Sunny and warm, but not too hot. I didn't see a single hiker on the trail today. The bugs are starting to be a problem, though.Stephen Fosdick, 100biketours.comhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06902177658176345916noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5653551503206362917.post-28143566639694263592015-06-21T13:51:00.000-07:002015-06-21T13:51:30.950-07:00Thursday, June 4, 2015I got up early and found that it had been raining lightly over night. I had about 10 miles of walking to get to the trail head at Olallie Lake Resort. A truck with a dumpster box drove by headed for the resort, but he wouldn't give me a ride.<br />
<br />
About a mile befort the resort, a fisherman stopped and gave me a ride to the resort. It's a little early, but the resort and the store were able to open due to the lack of snow in the area. The store had some great hiker items. The one thing that I was surprised that they had was replacement insoles for my shoes. There were not exactly the right size, but they worked. I'm starting to get a blister on the bottom of my left foot from the road walking with my heavy pack.Stephen Fosdick, 100biketours.comhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06902177658176345916noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5653551503206362917.post-38372947112261355962015-06-15T16:47:00.000-07:002015-06-15T16:47:17.726-07:00Wednesday, June 3, 2015Hood River, OR to near Olallie Lake Resort. Zero trail miles, but about 10+ miles of road walking in between rides.<br />
<br />
I got a total of 7 rides today before I used up all my ride karma. My first ride was from a logger named Frank. He took me from where I was camping overnight to the town of Hood River.<br />
<br />
Next, I crossed over the Columbia River to the town of Bingen, WA. You are not allowed to walk across the bridge in Hood River, nor ride your bike, but a very nice woman gave me a ride to the Post Office. She knew I was a PTC hiker, but thought I was too clean. Bingen was a nice little town, but I did not find what I was looking for, so I headed back to Hood River. Two women headed for Portland gave me a ride back across the river to Oregon.<br />
<br />
While I was in Hood River, I found a great sidewalk cafe called Remedy. The had lentil soup with vegetables, and amazing smoothies. I ate my lunch with Ira while we enjoyed the mid-day sunshine.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjc7TtQJzXFNjgYrAt61WEHrvAvqxSbmJTz80aZHTmu9_dgm2bdfOXh0LuNdqCU3njyswJJaPcIrMWpwRgYcSptbS3DiYhZbR5nHTmdpN8xE3Clrl_prxlEG2gwfx0qW1pZv6mafdA-OEk/s1600/20150603_105636-Ira.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjc7TtQJzXFNjgYrAt61WEHrvAvqxSbmJTz80aZHTmu9_dgm2bdfOXh0LuNdqCU3njyswJJaPcIrMWpwRgYcSptbS3DiYhZbR5nHTmdpN8xE3Clrl_prxlEG2gwfx0qW1pZv6mafdA-OEk/s320/20150603_105636-Ira.jpg" width="253" /></a></div>
<br />
Oregon has joined the short list of states that have legalized Pot (as of July 1st ... now you know the <i>REAL</i> reason there are so many hikers on the PTC this year!) Two older guys that are new "growers" gave me a ride South on Highway 35 towards Government Camp.<br />
<br />
Ride #5 was Rick from Springfield, OR. He was very interesting, and he works for the Forest Service. He gave me a ride all the way to Highway 26, where I needed to go South towards Bend.<br />
<br />
Ride #6 was from an older Chinese woman named Sally. Next week, she will go to visit her family in China. I'd really like to go to China for a visit, and Sally would make a wonderful tour guide. Her English was very good, and she knew a lot about China. She was on her way to Bend to visit a friend. She gave me a ride to Road 42.<br />
<br />
From there , I knew the rides would be much more difficult, as it was mid-week and in a remote area without a lot of traffic. I walked a ways when ride #7 came along ... 3 younger women from Portland, OR (pizza makers by trade) were heading to Timmothy Lake for some camping with friends. They even went out of their way about 5 miles to get me a little closer to Olallie Lake. They were fun!<br />
<br />
Finally, it was starting to get dark, so I found a clearing to put up my tent. I had about 8 - 10 miles to go to reach the resort.<br />

I called my dentist, and they were able to move up my appointment ... that was a good thing!<br />
<br />
Ivan was on his way to the coast to interview for a position with the forest service. Good luck on landing a perfect job!<br />
<br />
I had an enjoyable time looking around and seeing the sites! My son, Kyle Ocean is an artist, and has one of his projects on display near a bike shop there, called "Northwest Sun."<br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
There was a nice coffee shop there, called Dog River Coffee. They have free computers that customers can use ... that was nice. I sent a letter to the editor of the local <a href="http://www.hoodrivernews.com/news/2015/jun/06/letters-editor-june-6/">newspaper</a>, thanking the town for being nice to PCT hikers.</div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
It rained a little overnight, but not bad. It's good to get this hike started.</div>

The theme for today is to reduce my pack weight! As each day goes by, I seem to be adding more and more stuff to carry, or I remember something that I've forgotten to pack, and it's really adding up! A heavy pack will be lead to a 'less-than-happy camper,' as they say. So I've decided that I need to leave some things behind. Do I really need 4 pair of socks? Can I find a lighter container than the original container, to help reduce the weight? I didn't need the Advil bottle, as I was able to put them in a small zip-lock bag.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Here's another example ... I have a brand of toothpaste that I really like, and I had already packed the tube, but it's a large tube that was almost full (6.5 oz.), and I know I won't use the entire tube on this trip. I have a couple of smaller tubes of toothpaste (.85 oz.) that I got from my dentist, but I don't like the flavor at all. The simple solution to my problem was to empty out the smaller tube, and then re-fill it with the brand that I like. This seems like a lot of work, but it saved me about 1/4 pound (or more), and it also doesn't take up as much space in my pack. Every little bit helps.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I've also been going through some of my photos, and I'm cleaning some of my chips so I can take lots of pictures on this trip. I found this shot from 2012, and I thought I'd share it with you here.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
In just a few more days, I'll be leaving Idaho for my big hike, and I'm getting very excited!<br />
<br />Stephen Fosdick, 100biketours.comhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06902177658176345916noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5653551503206362917.post-5219556294301291112015-05-28T16:23:00.000-07:002015-05-28T16:23:45.109-07:00Thursday, May 28, 2015<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I've been busy getting my back-pack pulled together with all my gear. I'm feeling like I'm taking too much stuff this time, and I know my pack will be very heavy. It's already around 30 lbs, but that includes some of the food that I'll be taking along. The good news is that there is lot of water in the Northern Oregon Section of the PCT where I'll be starting, so I won't be worried about water and I won't have to carry a lot of water during the day. Most of the time, I'll be camping near water as well.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
One problem that I seem to have, as the days pass by, is I keep thinking of additional 'stuff' that I need to take. Mose of it is fairly light, but when you add it all together, the sum of it all is HEAVY. I usually don't carry any rope, but I thought that I should be better with my food and hang it from a tree. The rope only weighs less than a pound, but it still adds up.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Today, I went for about a 3 mile hike with my loaded pack, just to make sure it is going to work OK. This is often called a "shake down" hike.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div align="justify" class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I went to Hull's Gulch, which is located at the end of 8th Street near Boise. It was a beautiful morning for hiking.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgtcBtlDQ21xctNMH-jNCtKIQ0klt8_UO2gI7kFL7D4gNmgaH6UmS0s_OekBI_FiPEDKZE9Q4lp5oEVl7HTz1O5SgSFsRPY-u74WDnIllKhlUD_R2Ss6xEjMJCPf_XE6nIjwXX3nUtKZUY/s1600/Hull%2527s+Gulch.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgtcBtlDQ21xctNMH-jNCtKIQ0klt8_UO2gI7kFL7D4gNmgaH6UmS0s_OekBI_FiPEDKZE9Q4lp5oEVl7HTz1O5SgSFsRPY-u74WDnIllKhlUD_R2Ss6xEjMJCPf_XE6nIjwXX3nUtKZUY/s320/Hull%2527s+Gulch.jpg" width="318" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I still have not secured transportation to Hood River, Oregon. There's a Greyhound bus that leaves Tuesday evening for $60 one-way. The problem is that it arrives in Hood River at 4:00 a.m.! There's also a bus that leaves Boise on Wednesday Morning, and gets to Hood River in the afternoon ... same price. That one sounds better to me.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I've posted an advertisement on Craig's List asking for a ride to Hood River, and I can probably get a ride for around $30 - $40. I'll wait to see if I get any responses before I buy a ticket on Greyhound.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
And there's always the option of just hitch-hiking. I've had fairly decent luck getting rides between Boise and Portland in the past, and you can be sure that there will be plenty of travelers going that direction. I even started building some good Karma ... the other day while driving on I-84 between Boise and Meridian, there was a young guy walking with a gas can in his hand, so I stopped and gave him a ride to the gas station. I even offered to give him a ride back to his car. Some people call this "paying it forward."</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Wednesday will be here so quickly now!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
</div>

One will go to Timberline Lodge at Mt. Hood, and the other will go to Cascade Locks. I'm using the Flat Rate Medium box from the post office. It was just under $13 each to mail the boxes, and it will cost another $5 at Timberline Lodge to pick up my box, but at least I'll be getting exactly what I want in terms of the food selection, and I don't have to hitch into Government Camp (or walk) to get to the post office. And if I get to Timberline Lodge on a weekend, I can still get my box, whereas I'd have to wait until Monday at the post office.<br />

<br />
I also sent away for my Canada Entry Permit ... if I make it all the way to Canada, I plan to continue on in to the town of Hope, then make my way to Vancouver, BC for a visit before heading back to Idaho. <br />

I've retired from Valley Regional Transit, and I'm about to pick-up where I left off the Pacific Crest Trail in 2008. I'm planning to catch a ride to Hood River, Oregon on Wednesday, June 3 to visit my son, Kyle Ocean, then make my way to the Olallie Lake Resort and start hiking North on the PCT to Timothy Lake, Timberline Lodge, Eagle Creek, Cascade Locks, and on towards White Pass - Highway 12 in Washington. That should be about 250 miles or so of hiking.<br />
<br />
In 2008, I caught a ride from Olallie Lake Resort up to Timothy Lake, hiked a bit, and then skipped ahead again to Cascade Locks for a trail event. When the event was over, I tried to hike back to Sisters, going up the Eagle Creek Trail to Mt. Hood. That's were it started to snow on me, so I caught a bus back to Sisters.<br />
<br />
Starting at Ollalie Lake Resort will be the best way to get all the miles I missed in 2008 ... besides, this is an easy section to hike as there is not a lot of climbing, except the climb up to Timberline Lodge.<br />
<br />
In mid-July, I want to be back in Idaho for a family campout, and I also want to be in Salem, Oregon by August 7, 2015 for my 40th High School Reunion from North Salem High School. But other than that, I'll be on the trail!<br />

I took a quick trip to Seattle to attend a class for work. The weather was cool and it rained some, but what do you expect for the Pacific Northwest? It's been a long time since I've posted to my blog! It seems that I've been posting more to Facebook, so I'll try to keep this more current.<br />
<br />
I went on a great hike on Saturday up to Bogus Basin Ski Resort, just outside of Boise, Idaho. I tried to find a trail that would take me all the way down to Boise, but this trail only went about 8 miles or so. I had to hitch the rest of the way down the mountain, but it was an easy ride.<br />

I was surprised that there were mountain bikers on this trail ... it wasn't used very much, and it had a lot of rocks that would have made it difficult on a bike, but all in all, it was a great trail for hiking.Stephen Fosdick, 100biketours.comhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06902177658176345916noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5653551503206362917.post-70477828449609778072013-03-17T21:56:00.001-07:002013-03-17T21:57:26.899-07:00March 17, 2013I've been a volunteer for the Boise Police Department for about 4 months now, and it's something that I really enjoy doing. On Sunday's, I cover about 15 miles of trails along both sides of the Boise River Greenbelt. There are path's on both sides of river.<br />
<br />
Some of the paths do not allow bikes, and there are parts where one side of the river is in the City of <br />
Boise and the other side of the river is in Garden City. (We do not patroll the section of the bike path that is in Garden City.<br />
<br />
Lately, I've been using one of the three gas powered carts (like golf carts) to do my patroll. On warmer days, I'll ride one of the nice mountain bikes that are available.<br />
<br />
It was cool today, yet sunny. At one point, for about 30 seconds or so, it was snowing, if you can believe that!<br />
<br />
Both of these shots were taken from the same spot ... one looking towards the East (up-river) and the other looking towards the Northwest (down-river).<br />

It was a clear day, but it was also windy and cool. I started out the day on a bicycle, but by mid-day I switched over to one of the carts because it was just too windy. There were a lot of people out jogging today, and a fair number of folks on bikes, but not near as many as I thought there might be.<br />

This is a shot I took this afternoon:<br />

It's a very rewarding experience for me.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjP34MFCVphOQu24dzS-4RDl3Dlg-TCYzNygygqvenoUYrZOGMhHgjt8-_WyzdVvVuglHGczI9ZAu7WfntyAC6wL4-A2mqowEJKsKrBZA4UoizOJOyiPAaO3CQ0w1RES8pTRhOAqIzvb8o/s1600/20121223_104055.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjP34MFCVphOQu24dzS-4RDl3Dlg-TCYzNygygqvenoUYrZOGMhHgjt8-_WyzdVvVuglHGczI9ZAu7WfntyAC6wL4-A2mqowEJKsKrBZA4UoizOJOyiPAaO3CQ0w1RES8pTRhOAqIzvb8o/s320/20121223_104055.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This is the cart that I use to patrol the greenbelt. It's called the Red Mule. It's top speed is about 12 miles per hour! In my 5 hour shift, I go from one end of the bike path and nature trail to the other, all within the Boise City Limits, and on both sides of the Boise River (about 8 miles or so on each side). The bike trail is longer than that, but parts of it are in Garden City (not Boise), and other parts are in the county (also not within the Boise City Limits).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Today, under the Broadway Bridge, I removed this Winco shopping cart. It had been near the river's edge for about 3 weeks. I had to cross over a small side channel (about 3 feet wide) by crossing on a log as to not get my feet wet. One of the wheels was bent sideways so it was not easy to push the shopping cart.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
In a new park at the East end of the section that we patrol, an out house had been knocked over. I'm not sure if the wind blew it over or if someone pushed it over. I was able to get it back up-right, but it is very dirty and will need to be serviced!</div>

Big dogs, small dogs, barking dogs! I do like dogs, even though I don't have one right now.<br />
<br />
Today, while making a delivery to a house near Horseshoe Bend, Idaho, this very cute dog came to greet me at my truck:<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
He was right under my feet! All he wanted was someone to play with!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The last couple of days, I've seen a lot of snow. It's not too bad yet. I haven't needed to put on the tire chains. My truck is equiped with a shovel and chains if I need them.</div>
